BAGAN
(Birthplace of Myanmar Culture)

Bagan, known as the city of four million pagodas is the richest archaeological site in Asia. This enchanting city is situated on the estern bank of the irrawaddy River about 193 kilometers south of Mandalay The ruins of the city of Pagan cover an area of 42 square kilometres containing over 5000 edifices. The majority of these well-preserved shrines offer a rich architectural heritage from the 11th to 13th century era.

Tharabar Gate

The Tharabar Gateway marks the eastern enterance to the old city of Bagan. This and the small section of brick wall on either side are all that remain of the ninth-century rampart. Each side of the gate contains a niche housing Bagan's guardian nats,'Mister Handsome' and his sister 'Golden Face', known collectively as 'Lords of the High Mountain'.
