by Khin Myo Thwe The tax-free markets that have opened since 31st March are bustling with shoppers. These markets are opened under the arrangement of Yangon City Development Committee. The prices of goods are fixed by authorities. No taxes will be put on the income got from selling in these markets. Agricultural firms, Myanmar Fisheries Federation, YCDC, privates firms and farmers sell their goods at these markets.
Various kinds of vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and edible oil are available at these markets. Other shops, which sell goods at their own rates, are not allowed in these markets. Therefore it is rather cheap to shop at these markets. The authorities permit only the producers to sell their goods. So, goods in these markets are very fresh. These markets open seven days a week from 6 am to 6 pm. Most shops open from 6 am to 10 am and from 2 pm to 6 pm. The peak hour of business is from 7 to 8 am. At about 9 am, fresh vegetables are almost run out. There are many shoppers joining queues in front of the shops very early in the morning before the shops open for they want cheap and fresh goods. We can also see queues of shoppers waiting for goods to come because the goods in the shops have run out. There are four tax-free markets in four townships in Yangon. The numbers of shops in the markets are increasing. In Kamayut township tax-free market, the shops have increased from 70 to 322 and in Kaba Aye tax-free market from 60 to 150. It seems that new shops will be opened under the arrangement of YCDC later. © Khin Myo Thwe |
