Though it is said to join monastic order, it is just for the time being. Myanmar people intend to join holy order at least once in their lifetime. The driver from my house said that he wanted to take 10-day leave and joined monastic order at last. This photo was taken on the fourth day of his retreat. The number of monks is limited according to amount of donation. Moreover, several religious festivals are held at monasteries and pagodas when the rainy season is over and the cold season sets in. yearly renovation of pagodas is also a scene of this season. A lot of scaffolding are covered the pagoda to be renovated.

It happened the other day. When I called Meikhtila near Mandalay, the line didn't go through. Area code for the town is 064 but I could not dial "0". But, I could dial "0" from the number 408865. When I asked an acquaintance of mine, he said, "May be it is locked ". Since, the telephone was bought there was a key attached to the line. We can make a call only when the key is put into the keyhole under the telephone. My friend continued to explain that it was a way to prevent the callers from making long distance and oversea calls without the owner's permission. I think pink telephone from Japan also has such key. Generally, there are two telephones per 2,000 persons in this country. Price of telephone has gone up during this half this year. Prices of telephone and car are higher than those of Japan. It is unbelievable from the point of view of a person of Japan, where one person in two can use a mobile phone. It will be a bit difficult to find a flat with a telephone installed in it.

My pet cat was mewing noisily while I was doing the cleaning after opening the doors in the afternoon. When had a look, a pigeon was in the 9th floor flat and looking for an exit. I caught it and set it free. I once wrote about having a bat in the flat. The birds seen in town are not different from those of Japan. They are sparrows, pigeons and crows. Crows are not useful also in Japan. They have a difficult life finding food at garbage bins here.

Generally, electricity did not come over half day throughout August to October. The situation has become a little better after I moved here. But, very often, electricity doesn't come from 6 o'clock to 7o'clock in the evening. Then, it comes back. But, it goes out again in five minutes. Then it comes back again and goes out again in ten minutes. We often experience such electricity distribution.

Many festivals come one after another in Myanmar where the rainy season has been over. This photograph was taken at Yathedaung hill in the middle of Kyaikhtiyoe mountain. The young and old people from a village in their new clothes were going to the monastery to offer this branch of a tree with cash notes attached on it. Such ceremonies are also held in Yangon. But, period is a bit different. As I wrote in a news last year, floral design, peacock figure, design of other birds and monkey worth some ten thousands are made of paper notes.
