It was rather hot in Yangon last week, for there was no rain. Matriculation examination result came out yesterday (30th July 2000). They was announced at the school where the exam were held. Universities have opened for those who passed the Matriculation examination previous years.

There is a special flight from Yangon to Siem Reap, which is located Angkor Wat in Cambodia by Air Mandalay. Price and schedule is as follows. Three days only -18/8/2000, 20/8/2000, 01/9/2000.

Part 1
A geme corner has been opend at 5th floor of Blazon Shopping Center that was opened this month. There are dance, DJ and Drum game. Two coins are needed to play a game. A coin costs 40 Kyats.

We got a color picture of a gaint marble image.

New Millennium International Exhibition was held at Yangon Trade Center today. Over 300 booths of electronics, consumer goods companies and etc participated in the exhibition. Fashion shows were also held. The exhibition will last till 30th of July.

A gaint marble image has been conveyed along Ayeyarwaddy river from Sakyin Village, Madaya Township, near Mandalay since 24th July. The barge which carries the image arrive in Mandalay on 25th July and will proceed to Pakokku on 26th July. The barge will stop over for the night in some towns. And it will arrive in Yangon on 5th August. After giving finishing touches, it will be the largest marble Buddha image in the world. It proceed to lay a special rails to convey in Yangon. One of my friend went to there to watch 23PM. But he colud not see anything because of many peoples.

Pears have come into season. They are being sold all over Yangon. A pear costs 100 Kytas for three.

CYBERMEC Information Technology Center of Myanmar Economic Corporation was opened on last Friday. Computers are on display and demonstration in this center. Computer training is planned to be given later.

Recently, the use of video compact discs were on the increase in Yangon. VCD rental shop were also on the increase. And VCD players have sold well. To have a look at the past sales, video tapes were sold less than VCDs. China-made-VCD players are available at K20,000 per set and a VCD costs only K1300. Karaoke VCDs have add well. Foreign movie VCDs can be imported easily and cheaply. The fact that VCDs are increasingly used shows a good sign.

Concert of Koto Ensemble was very crowded with music lovers. Audience have a chance to play Japanese harp after the program. And they really enjoyed it.

Koto Ensemble Concert (Japanese Harp Concert), presented by Embassy of Japan , supported by the Japan Foundation will be held at Traders Hotel tomorrow.
Tomorrow is Martyer's Day, a public holiday. It is held in commemoration of nation leaders. National leader General Aung San and colleagues were assassinated on that day in 1947.

Tomorrow is full moon day Waso; the beginning of the three month Buddhist Lent. People offer "things" to members of Sanghas(Venerable monks) and visit pagodas. Buddhist monks have to reside at only a place. They are to practise religious meditation and study Buddhist scriptures at monasteries. People do not move to other places and hold their wedding reception during Buddhist Lent.

Third ASEAN Tiger Cup Soccer match will be held in Thailand on 4th November. Myanmar team is in Group-A and will play with Thailand on 4th , with Philippines on 6th, with Brunei on 8th and with Indonesia on 12th November.

An art exhibition has been displayed for the public since 1st July at No.42(D) New University Avenue Road, Yangon. Over one hundred paintings of twelve young Myanmar artists such as Kyaw Zay Yar, Ei Ei San and others are on show at the exhibition. It will last till 15th July.

The famous actor Dwe starred as a woman in a video movie. The director Kutho gave Dwe the script at the wedding reception of actress Soe Myat Thu Za. "He is so much like a woman. He is no longer Dwe"(Actress Nanda Hlaing) "If he is a real girl, I might fall in love with him"(Comedian Kin Kaung). He has become famous to that extent.

According to a magazine published here recently, Mazuda Jeep diesel engines will be produced after setting up a conglomerate company. Ministry of Industry-2 together with nine companies such as Yuzana and etc, are planning to build a factory and produce diesel engine in the near future.

E-mail service was allowed to public recently here. At last, eleven IT companies have been allowed to use internet. The rate for using internet is US$65 for up to 30 hours per month.

Authorities of YCDC(Yangon City Development Committee) have urged the people to register their pets and to have them vaccinated. People are allowed to keep pets only after registration. The authorities intend to remove stray dogs and cats. And they are taking action against keeping pets without registration in the near future.

Fax service of Myanmar Post and Telecommunication have been extended. There are Fax Service in 72 towns so far. New offices are opened in Putao in northernmost, in Kaw Thaung in southernmost. Fax service are opened in 33 post offices..

Universities have been opened since 27th June for each subject. There is plan to reopen all the universities all over the country in this month.

Hard Rock Cafe has opened in Yangon. But the shop has nothing to do with Hard Rock Cafe all across the world. They serve Myanmar food mainly such as Mohinga, Nangyi salad and tea. It is located near the building of Myanmar Motion Picture Association. People from movie world like a director, actor and actress frequent here. T-shirts on which the name of the teashop is printed are on sale at K 2,000 each.

The final match of EURO-2000 was broadcast live on Myawady Television at 12:30am this morning. Although it was very early, the people were so interested that we could hear a laud cheer when a player scored a goal.

A new shopping center [BLAZON] was opened today. It was grand opening. Soft opening took place on 23rd June. There are shops such as Shiseido, Esprit, Adidas, Guess, Wacoal and etc, and shops of Mega Co Ltd. and food centers and cafe on the five floors of the center. The doorman who great "Mingalarbar(hello)" in sweet voice and friendly active sales attendants seems to show good service. Opening hours are from 9AM to 9PM seven days a week. The address is No.5/1 at the corner of U Wisara and Chin Dwin Road.
