At last, I got to Mandalay where I had longed to go for a long time, on 1st July. I felt worried about the difference between Yangon and Mandalay. The weather seemed to be five degrees higher than Yangon. Now, it rains continuously day after day in Yangon for it is rainy season. In such days, temperature seems to be lower. Mandalay is located in hot dry-zone. It scarcely rains in Mandalay in the rainy season. In Yangon, we live in special air-conditioned rooms at the hostel in University of Foreign Language. So, I had to make some arrangements in advance to protect the heat in Mandalay. But, in the building in Mandalay University, there were not enough furniture for foreign students. The hostel, specially reserved for me was generally a student hostel. There was an air-conditioning system but it was not systematically installed. Because I had been in Mandalay only for four or five days, I couldn't say anything for sure. I was thinking that how could I solve serious temperature problem. I couldn't do anything about the trouble that mosquitoes entered the mosquito net for there were plenty of the insects. When I put a mosquito net on the one-person-bed, although I put the fringe under the bed sheet, it was not so convenient. I didn't know when mosquitoes entered the net. So, I had no choice except fore closing the windows of the room before I went to bed. But the thermometer showed 33.4 degree. When I woke up in the morning it was 30 degree. I did not fail to take a walk early every morning as before. But, I had to take great care not to be lost. Since 5 am, the city was lively with the people. I thought that it was a great chance to see way of life of the people around us. I had to keep stiff upper lip bearing "everything is experience" in mind. But, I had to spend my night time in a daze in the room of the hostel. I didn't know when big and small insects entered when I switched on the lights for there was no mosquito screen. It was a great trouble for me. When I started to work on word processor, small insects entered among the keys. So, I had to switch off the light in the room. One satisfying thing was that fluorescent lamp above the corridor gave light to the room. But it was not enough to read. Putting my mind at ease was a bit difficult. I needed to take some time to find a way to use the room which got light. The room was for two persons. But, I was allowed to stay alone. So, it was wide. Two rooms was made into one. But, there was no cupboard to keep things. Therefore, it was not neat and tidy. Moreover, there was no drawer in the table in the room. I thought that how could I keep books stationery, watch, wallet and etc looking at the table with things scattered on it. Book self or cupboard was needed to be put hurriedly. Staying in the uncivilized city, I had a lot of knowledge through immature experiences. © Suzuki Yoshio |
