A total of 150 physically and mentally handicapped children are undergoing training including walking exercises at Eden Handicap Service Centre in Insein Township, a satellite town of Yangon. The school founded by a woman volunteer has received assistance from ODA Japan since last year. Trainees are eagerly taking part in activities such as swimming, a compulsory exercise for the handicapped, and others.
Zaw Min Htet aged 23 who is handicapped with cerebral palsy is working for the school as an assistant. After matriculation he was allowed to attend a university with the subjects of his choice from three subjects-history, economics and mathematics. He is bright. Moreover, he is a talented artist. He took part in the Asean art exhibition for the handicapped held in Cambodia and won prizes. He received a lot of offers to buy his paintings.
His father, a doctor, is a Chin national. He has a sister who is attending the Institute of Technology. His grandfather is an artist. He started painting at the age of five. He studied painting from his grandpa. He draws paintings controlling his shaking hands.He likes drawing landscape and natural scene of forest, mountains, rivers, etc because he thinks viewers can hear different sounds from the painting and they can express the state of mind of the people.
His aim is to help the children with the revenue from sales of his work. He intends to keep painting for this reason. © Nishigaki Mitsuru |
