The coldest time in Yangon
by Kenichi Kimura

I am not sure that it will continue to be hot in Japan. When I watched NHK TV program from satellite at the end of August, it seemed Japan was more hot than Myanmar.

It has widely been said in Yangon that Yangon is the coldest. It was very cold for a bout two weeks in last December. Our teacher from University of Foreign Languages used a fact which I couldn't remember exactly in teaching in the class. It was said that about 100 people died of severe coldness because there was cold wave near Myanmar and India border north east of Indian. That coldness seemed to have come to Myanmar. On TV, the warning that not to take a bath before going to bed, to make sure that children put on warm clothes and to have a look at them while they were sleeping at mid-night.

In such a cold weather two Japanese women climbed up Kyaik Hti Yoe mountain. We couldn't sleep a wink for it was too cold. The Japanese Man who told us that his nails had broken due to the coldness.

In Yangon, extremely cold wind blew. Warm clothes and jackets were sold without discount in heaps. People had no choice. They had to buy clothes at cheaper shops. So these shops were so crowded that only heads of people could be seen. My room mate and I had to put on socks, sweaters and to cover ourselves with blankets for there was no cotton quilt. This situation lasted for only two weeks. If was a bit cold in the morning of September. It was not very cold but shower is severely cold.

I have been in Yangon as a student for a bout two and half years. First, I stayed at a small hotel. At that time, it was very hot because it was May. But, I went to bed after switching off the air-conditioner at night. Then, I have been living in a rented flat for two times up to now. The first thing I did was to buy an air-conditioner. But, I didn't need to use it during two-year -period. Maybe, it is because I feel cold than others. Those who take it for granted that Myanmar is a hat country, may think of me telling a lie. But, it actually happened in Yangon. There were times when you couldn't do nothing a bout intense heat. When I walk under the hot sunshine in the city without on umbrella, my eyes smarted as if salt entered them. And the body was wet all over with sweat. The temperature rose steadily.

I went Bagan with four friends of mine in July. We stayed at a guest house there. When we were there I had to switch on the air-conditioner even during my sleep. After visiting Bagan six or seven times, I realize that it is really hot as I thought before.

And when I visited Inlay lake in August two or three years ago, I had to buy and put on a Shan traditional dress to go on sight- seeing during a boat trip in Inlay lake.

So, you have to be careful of the weather which changes according to region. For those who are going to Kyi Hi Ye and Pyin Oo Lwin need to bring a sweater or a jumper. If so, you are fully equipped.
