Story of lovely pet dog in Yangon
by Kenichi Kimura

It has been a year since I have brought my pet dog from Japan.

When I went back to Japan in July last year, the dog I had left with others to take care had changed a lot. It was very thin and there were a lot of lice and fleas on his body. So I had decided to take it to Myanmar. I had to make several calls to Myanmar to enquire whether I could take it to Myanmar of not. And I asked veterinary surgeon to write a health certificate for it in English. That was not too difficult. Moreover, I met the man who sent the dog like "Golden Red River" to Yangon in recent years. After preparing documents, I headed for the check-in counter at the new Fukuoka Airport with my dog after saying good bye to my friend who saw me off. Looking at the dog in the Yen 30,000 worth cage, a duty officer asked "Have you had the dog checked? " I couldn't answer anything. "Please come with me to check-room." A good-natured woman staff guided me. I had prepared only the documents for the entry in Myanmar but nothing for the departure from Japan. A gook-natured man staff from check-department told me that I needed a rabies vaccination certificate for the dog. So, I was not able to leave Japan on that day.

Rabies vaccination certificate is valid for four to ten months). I was able to leave Japan for Myanmar three days late. In my previous entry into Myanmar, My facsimile was seized by airport authorities. a friend of mine had informed the airport in advance that a dog would be brought from Japan. The man from airport said that the dog from Japan and that from Myanmar were the same. The dog is ordinary one that is cheap in Japan. and it is like stray dogs in Yangon. When I go for a walk with the dog everyday, everybody looks at us as if it was a strange scene.

The pet dog "Yuu" has become more to be like a pet dog. It doesn't have any serious disease in such a hot country like this and it has become fat. when I took a walk with it, an elderly Myanmar man said to me "Is it pregnant? If it has puppies, Please give me one." Actually, Yuu is a 7-year old young dog. Since she has been in Yangon, she doesn't eat dog feed. The man, domestic helper, made feed mixed pork and rice. Now, she is two times fatter than she was in Japan. They think that being fat is lovely. In such a country they don't understand to make the dog diet. If so, will the dog and become fatter and fatter.
