Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival (Inle)
There are many teoating islands in the vast lake of Inlay of Nyaung Shwe where one can reach via Shwe Nyaung on the way from Thazi to Tounggyi in Shan States. There is a small village, Haya Ywa mam one of there islands where the temple of Phaung daw oo pagoda exists.

It si a group of five images and it collectively benown as Phaung daw Oo images. Teh images have a long history back to Alcung Sithu of Pagon. He brought the imager there on his visit to Inaly on his royal oarge. The imges are so thickly gilded throughout the length of time ghey even lost the original shape adn they look like solid masses of pure gold. It is believed that by gilding or carrying the piece of the yellow roles warm by the images along with the person he is in ulnerable to all calamiities Every filgrimsttrys to collect a piece of old yellow robe cast off from the images. He can buy the souvemirs of teh placealso.

Teh temple or depository is grandly rebuilt. Any one can reach there by a boat trip. You can watch the legrowers on thier daily communicational plying in the lake. There is also a floating market and the buying and selling are done on the boat resting afloat.

On the fifth waring moon of thadingyut (October) the festival starts. During this time the Images are carried on the pecial decorated barge which sails from the original peace to slyaung Shew where the images finally stop for veneration by the devotees. Along the way the barge stops at certain regular stoppages for the audience there to pay homage. Then at the close of the festival the images come bact to the monastery to stay for the rest of the year.

The people of the area are very happy to have the chance to worship the imagesin thier pleaces. They offer aroundant funds for the maintainance and renovation of the monestery. It is also a merriment and fun for the people of the locality. People from every place come to participate.

Festival of the Standing Buddha on Manadalay Hill
To commenmorate the visit of the lord Buddha to Manadalay Hill about 2500 odd years ago, a huge standing Buddha was built on top of the Mandalay Hill by king Mingon. One of the image of this disciples is placed at its feet. The right hand of the image was pointing to the them nevly built royal city to mark the manner of the lord, pronouncing His prohecy for the estalishment of a great city later on in that place. King Mindon ruled peacefully and graceously under this Buddha's hand. The aramge is 27 feet high.

The site of this enomous inage is really on the hightest point. To illustrate the legend of the Ogress Sanda Mukhi who had the chance to pay homage to the lord Buddha, a talleau in concrete was made on the hill.

The structures of stairways, images, temples and decurahions were later made by a hermit, named U Khanti. He was pious and alle hesmit who planned and designed all the sturctures by himself. He collected donations throughout the country and built and repaired many of the religious edificls in many pleaces. He made a great renovations of immense value.

Not only at a festival day but all the time the people visit the hill and take easy steps with the newly built stairvays and pary at all the stages on the way up.

The orignal image had been bournt down by bush frie. So, one Month by naem U Nandiya tried to seek two large teak wold tops though out the country and he moved up the logs onto the hill with a great effeor helped by volumters. The craftsman began to curve the logs into a standing Buddha and finally the new image could be successfully reinstated.

During the World War II Teh Manallay hill was battered by allied air strike. There were a lot of delries all over. After the war, all are repaired adn reconstruciton folloed rapidly.

The festival of the pagoda on Manadalay Hill is annually celebrated with amusements and fun.

MahaMuni Pagoda Festival (Manadalay)
MahaMuni Pagoda is the most welknown pagoda with a huge gold image of the lord Buddha in it. It is a land mark of Manadalay an ancient cafital of Myanmar. It lies to the south of the town.

Originally this holy image belonged to Vesali an old city near Mrohaung (Mrausv) in Rakhine State. In 1784, King Bodaw paya, got the image brought by his son by over land route to the them royal capital at Amarapura. It exited there ever since.

To all the Buddhist visitors to Manadalay rarely miss the chance of paying homage to that image, and the chance of gilding to that golden image. It is an icon which is regarded as sacred because the people believed that this image was cast during the lifetime of Buddha in this veref presence. The image is thickly giled by numberous pilgrims so richly that the surface remains buldging in small mounds.

It is a great favourite of the hill tribes of Myanmar, and every time trival members in their distinctive costumer can be seen paying romage and praying in the temple. When the new city, Manadalay was built by King Mindon and shifted his royal capital from Amarapura to the new City, the pagoda reamins in the middle of the two cities.

There are pagoda market stalls along the stairway in entrance halls on all directions. You can buy handicrafts on ivory and jade, special face fourdes made of Thanatbaha barks, minsed with gold dust and some other special items of the loeality. It is worth to visit MahaMuni Pagoda to make the visit more complete, meaningful and meritorious. There is an anuual festival for the pagoda on a fixed date.

Festival of Kaung hmudaw at Sagaing
One of the significant pagodas beyond the Sagaing Hills is the hemis spherical structure of Kaung hmudaw, the great metorious deed of Royal donor which can be seen from a distance. The original name was Rejamanicula. It lies at six miles north of Sagaing right beside the main road to Shwebo.

It was built by King Thalun in 1636 to commenorate the re-establishment of Innwa city as the Royal cafital. Its shape is peculiar to any other stepas in the country. It is said to be modelled on hte structure of the Mahaceti in Sri Lanka. It stands on three circular terraces and the base in 400 feet in circumference. The height is 151 1/2 feet.

There is a decorative gateway on the entrance and a small temple had been constructed for the devotees to tray but it constitutes a cittle bit ammounce as it hinders the overall view from the entrance. However the canoty can not be seen from the base platfarm as the bulk of the stupe is so huge.

The festival of the Pagoda is annually held under the patronage of teh trustee board. There used to be entertaining pives for the visitors from nearly villages. There are so many pagoda stalls vending especially the Thankha (Limonia erenulata) the extracts of which is used for lady's make up, and the circulas grinding slabs called Kyauk-Pyin.

There is a big lake facing the pagoda which was formed to be hallowed out by digging up the earth to make bicks fro building the stupa. Behind the pagoda is a sacred pond called Myitta Kan, into which no leaves from the nearly trees ever fall into it. There is a stone inscription recording the history of the pagoda on the precint. It can be learnt that the sacred relics of the lord Buddha were enshined in it. Those who visit Sagaing never fail to proveed to Kaung hanudaw Pagoda.

Taungpyone Nat Festival
Majority of Myanmar people are Buddhists. However, some of them have any other traits of believe such as war shiping some deities for devotion or for consolation. It is not a peculia Thing to revere a Nat.

U Min gyaw or Taung Pyone Brothers are popular Nats. Those who have reliance upon Nat Brothers. Try to pay a happy visit to Taungpyone to pay them serpect. It is a sort of merry making trip.

About nine miles north of Mandalay Hill lies the village of Taungpyone where the Nat Brothers resieds. You can go there by rail, by car, by cart and by boat. Thousands of believers throng every year during the festival days in the Myanmar calender month of Waguing. (August)

Oral folklore has it that two young Indian brothers after the shipwreek landed on the coast of Thaton, clown south. They were known as ByatWi and Byat . They were rescued by a monk. They survived to posses the magical powers through a certain happenstance. The elder brother ended his life with tragic death while the younger one fled to Bagan to served the King Anawrahta. Which he was serving he fell in love with Mai Wunna of Mount Poppa. She bore him two sons Shwe Phyin gyi and Shwe Phyin galay who be came royal attendents at the court.

Once King AnawraRta built a pagoda in Taung Pyone village. The fuso brothers were given assiaments to supervise the building works. However they lacked their duties and consequenty they foiled to fill two bricks in a proper place. For negligonce of duty they were exeecuted and they became Nats. They are powerful again.

Since then the Pagoda Festival was converted into Nat Festival. Taung Pyone Festival is undeniably the biggest one and the faithful attended the festival without a miss. They amused themselves by participation in the crowd of the same creed.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda Festival
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda exist on the edge of the boulder on the extrenity of the range of mountain, at the distance of sixteen and a half mile from the town of Kyaikhto in Mon State. The pagoda festival started in December and lasted until April. A great number of pilgrims visited the sight every year.

Kyaikhto is 100 miles (161 kilimetre) distant from Yangon and from the town you can reach the base camp kinpun which is nine mile away. From that camp you can climb on foot the distance of seven and a half mile uphill to the foot the distance of seven adn a half mile uphill to the foot of the boulder. There are other means of transport for the weak and old folk, the bus serivce and the man carrying cradle livl a palanauin. To Kyaukhto there is a regular bus service daily from Yangon. There are rest hourses on the way along the foot path up till the summit for the visitors to take rest. There are also food stalls.

During the festival there are small huts build out of bamboo and thatch where the vendors display this wares, of handicrafts. decorative things made of cain and needs. Some of the medical hells produced in the loeality are also sold.

The pagosa on top was enshirne with a tress of sacred hair of the lord Buddha. There is a legend about the pagoda.

At a time 2500 years ago the pagoda was built by King tissa whose father was a derni-god or Zawgyi. His mothers belonged to the race of Nags. One day a young female Naga who came to find a lad of demi-god who was serving the hermit whom he revered. They fell in love and she begets a child who later became king. The hermit near dying came to the king and gave him the sacred shair which he kept here to on his top knot King tissa found a boulder accoraing to the wish to the hermit and then enshrimed the sacred hair in it. The pagoda worth a visit for those who wants to enjoy the forest scenery.

Thana boddhay Pagoda Festival
Thamloddhay pagoda exists in a certain peaceful village, 20 kilometers from the town of Mangwa to the South. The name of the pagoda retains the meaning of a great number of Buddha images, an amazing figure of 582257, installed in the riches along the walls of the temple compled.

It was started on 20th June 1939 under the iniative of the reverend Mohayin sayadaw and completed on 2nd March 1952. The surrounding place was very pleasant amids the Mohnyin Forest retreat.

Some visitors have the opinion that the tempel is similar in architectural design to the structure Borobodur in Indonesia. Unlike that one, this is a modern place of worship infused with the Myanmar Buddhist artistiic designs. It was a wonderful idea as to how so numerous thrines could be acconodated in one structure.

It is peculias note that the entrance is guarded by statues of a pair of magnificient white elephants which are regarded as sacred and auspicious in Buddhist symbolism instead of the usual chinthes, the mythical lions in that place.

It has a unique shape and design among all other temples in the whole country. Its square base has the diamesion of 166 feet. In the centre is the golden stupa, which is 132 feet or its height.

The tourist can have various scenes at this place for photography and pleasure. The annual Pagoda festival is usually celebreated in the month of tazaung mone, arround about November.

You can visit the forest of one thousand Bo-trees with the same number of Buddha images individually underneath each plant. Beyond the you can pay homage to the largest reelniding Buddha in the world.

Festival of Shwe Sandow Pagoda (Pyay)
The Shwe Sandaw Pagoda exists in the heart of the city Pyay on the hill of Thudassna.

At the end of the Buddhist sent, the lord Buddha came to Phawa OO Hill or Pho oo Hill via Sri lanka. There He met Sambula agre and wife Abimuseha whom He preached. Then the guardian Nats of the other hill came upon. The lord Buddha offered them the sacred relics.

Then the two traders Izzina and Baliha the natives of Ramawadi, received the sacred relics from the guardian Nat Ayeya Patha and enshrined them in the stupa on the hill of Tudassano. It was in the year 103 Buddhist ra.

The following kings begining wiht King Dntabaung renovated the stupa in 126 B.E. Alaung Sithu also donated and repaired the structure. The now unbralla was donated by King Alaung Phaya. On the full moon day of Wakhaung 1220. Myanmar ear, there had been a serious earth quake and the old pagoda colapsed. The pagoda was reconstructed by the publie initiating by U Tha Ywe adn family. The stupa is 127 feet in height.

The pagoda festival was celebrated in November annually. There is also the display of the sacred tooth at the pagoda and pilgrims from the distant places came to te fesitval to pay homage to teh sacred tooth and the pagoda.

There had been a lot of removation works adn the lift was constructed in the Myanmar traditional style with the spire on top. Many visitors arrived at Pyay pay homage to the pagoda, and to other old pagodas around. These in the site of old city of Pyus, the Sriscohetrain in the area called Hmawza and there is alos a small musian which displays all the excavated antiques of and a culptures of the area.
